CHAPTER 12

FIONA

My lungs were starting to burn by the time we surfaced. I was still shaking when we reached the beach a few seconds later. The spell had worn off at the end of our return trip. Thank the gods, we didn't need to drink another awful-tasting potion.

A smile curved my lips when Bas’s strong arms wrapped around me and lifted me off the ground. My wet suit was dripping, I had seaweed tangled in my hair, and I smelled like a wet dog. Over Bas’s shoulder, I could see the path that he and Argies had worn into the sand. Grams and Camille got up from their beach chairs, walking toward us as they waved to us.

“I was about to come after you,” Sebastian declared with that rough growl that always made me tingle. Unfortunately, it was too soon after the incident with the mermen to have a normal effect on me. I was still too shaken up. I’d faced demons, Tainted witches, and deranged Dark Fae without hesitation. Everything I had learned flew out the window when I faced the group of mermen. I would have snapped out of the fear-induced paralysis and fried their asses. I’m sure of it. Although, I’m grateful that I didn’t have to find out.

My laugh was strained. “We weren’t gone that long.”

Bas held me at arm’s length and looked me over. “What happened?” His gaze traveled from me to Violet, then Aislinn. He traced a bruise I could feel on my right cheek where one of the mermen had hit me.

I moved out of his hold and embraced Grams. “It’s nothing. I’d like to get home and get cleaned up and warmed up.”

“Butterfly,” Bas growled as he followed me up to the car. “Tell me.”

I stopped on the stairs and sighed. I looked at Violet, who nodded. “We had a run-in with some of Hasko’s friends. They thought they could force us to do something we didn’t want to.”

“Whaaat?” Argies howled before he shifted into his dragon and stalked toward the water. Aislinn was carrying the baby and shouted at him to stop. “No, Argies! You can’t go down there. They aren’t worth it and have been punished by Muir already. We have a mission to complete. Please!” Argies stopped, Kalliopi started crying, and Bas turned on Thanos.

My attention was split between watching what Argies was going to do and Thanos and Sebastian. “Where the hell were you while my mate was being accosted?”

Thanos turned to Violet. “I was dealing with her ex-husband. Why didn’t you tell me when we were down there? I would have shredded the assholes.”

Violet sighed and gestured to the stairs. “I’m freezing. Let’s have this conversation at Pymm’s Pondside. We are all fine, just a little banged up. It could have been a lot worse.”

I grabbed Bas’s hand so he couldn’t fight Thanos and pulled him with me. I was shaking hard enough that my teeth were clacking together. Sebastian didn’t object as we continued to his truck.
